Man dies in Powderhorn neighborhood shooting

Minneapolis police are investigating a shooting in the city’s Powderhorn neighborhood early Wednesday morning that has left a man dead.

Police could be seen at East Lake and South 17th streets around 2 a.m. Several officers, as well as evidence markers and crime scene tape, were all visible.

According to police, officers were called to an alley in the area after receiving reports of a person who was down. A caller also said a gunshot had been heard about 20 minutes before the call was made.

When officers arrived, they found a man, identified only as being in his late 20s, with a life-threatening gunshot injury, lying in an alley between 16th and 17th avenues, just south of Lake Street.

Although the man was given aid, he died at a hospital. He was identified as 29-year-old Michael Leonel Barreto.

Police add while officers also responded to the 3000 block of 17th Avenue shortly before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday for a ShotSpotter activation, nothing was found. They add there weren’t any other reports of gunfire at that time.
